How stupid, I can remeber when prisons were built outside of city limits for obvious reasons.  Notice it states "private", not state, not city, so who will the prison serve?  Or is this a media bloop?

INDEPENDENCE, MO  --  Some residents in Independence are upset over a proposed private prison being built near 23rd Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard. They say that the prison would affect their safety and property values, but the developer says that facility will be secure and will bring jobs to the area. FOX 4's Monica Evans has the report.

More than likely this is a housing facility for offenders from different jurisdictions. There are a few of these in the area, and different cities use (pay) them to house their prisoners, as they either don't have the facilities or the manpower to take care of prisoners. They are privately owned jails.

This area is near Dog Patch, so I say lets build a new prison. How can it bring down the property value of a double wide?

I would think with the rise in crime in Independence that putting a prison in there would be a matter of convenience to the residents.

As far as safety goes.. My friends that live in Leavenworth, feel perfectly safe.. they say when there is a break out.. the first thing the prisoner does is get as far away from the prison as they can.... Makes sense to me.

That's understandable,Who would want a prison in their neighborhood? It should be up to the people of Independence to decide if it is ok to build a prison in their city.

Sheriff, true they could take most of the owners of the trailers and lock them up.

Searchingtoo, yes, but in the middle of the city, instead of the out skirts of town? Aren't there schools close around? What if one escapes? Are they prepared?

jturner30, precisely, I think the people should have been notified prior to planning, that is the sneaky politics that Reimal is known for.

To "man" this facility is going to require an increase in taxes to pay the workers, does Independence, MO have that kind of money? How many jobs are there in Indpendence?

They could put it in the farm areas south of 40 Hwy, there aren't as many schools there.

See there now the people of the community have a look and perhaps some say about the project.

To bad it took blogs to get the public involved in decisions on their community.

It is not in the middle of town, it is on the far east side.. a side which is decaying I might add.

My whole point is that Independence is going to hell in a hen basket.. what difference does it make?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I live in Independnece, and have 2 children that go to school here. Sheriff, it may come as a great bewilderment to both yourself and Searchingtoo, however I do not live in a trailer. I live in a home that my husband and I work hard for, we are not on drugs nor are any of us criminals! The proposed facility is extremely close to a high school that our son walks to daily, and I am quite concerned about that. NO Vision, it didn't take a news story or blog to get us involved, we received info about it from the Neighbors of Winner Road Assn. before the news story hit, and are fully planning on attending the City Planning Commission meeting about it on Tuesday. Searchingtoo, how impudent of you to assume that it would be convienent for those of us who live in Independence to put a correctional facility here! We are working hard to improve the city for not only our generation, but our children's generation also. So as for the 'what difference would it make' comment, that is quite inflammatory in my opinion. Some of us want to make it a better place to live. Thank you jturner to state that it should be up to those of us who live in the area to decide if we want something like that in our backyard or not. Personally, I think it should be built in Blue Springs or Lees Summit but of course that would be completely out of the question, now wouldn't it? Let's all presume that the residents of Independence all live in trailer parks, and are of a criminal fiber. Sorry to break your stereotype folks, but that is simply not true.

Never even mentioned a trailer park.. but despite the fact that there ARE residents that are trying to improve Independence, the entities that run Independence are not working in the same direction.

Why do you think that so many home owners in Independence have abandoned their homes and allowed them to go section 8? Because they are not blinded as you are, as to the City, making it easy and intentionally inviting undesirables into the area? How do the residents like all the KC residents that are now part of the Independence School District? They will drive your schools into spending a lot of money trying to educate a group that clearly could not care less about an education.

What say you join the club, have your house declared section 8 and buy a new house somewhere that doesnt sacrifice it's residents to collect more Federal money?
For the record, I grew up in Independence, my parents saw the trend coming 30 years ago and sped outta there. Never looked back.

I think Independence residence have little excitement so this brings them a sense of doing something, I wonder if someone has figured out that they have been used as part of the game plan?

Yeah Mr-X I think some are catching on to the game plan.

Like I said "Reimal" is the name and Independence is the game, also recognized by Mr-X, "Big Shell".

Let's see now KCMO and KCKS covers the West, Independence covers the East, Grandview covers the South West, St. Joseph covers the far North, Liberty has too many Italians and would figure the game out too quickly. Still working or the process in Lee's Summit almost have all points covered, yeap, Mr-X, "Big-Shell". Smut

Looking for the pot of Gold! For those who have requested some type of "bio". Well here it goes, I chose this picture because it is my favorite cartoon characters. I can relate to the cat, the way he sneakly holds the prized possession of gold to offer Tweety. That cat is always up to something, and Tweety always escapes. I find that many people, and groups of people work in the same manner. So for the cat looking for a "bio", here it is. "Ask me, I'll decide if I want to tell you".
