SAO
PAULO, Brazil - A Brazilian model whose feet and hands were amputated
following a drug-resistant infection died early on Saturday, health
officials said.
Mariana
Bridi, 20, died at 2:30 a.m from complications related to a generalized
infection caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the Espirito
Santo State Health Secretariat said in a statement. The bacteria is
known to be resistant to multiple kinds of antibiotics.
Bridi had been in the hospital in the city of Serra in Espirito Santo state since Jan. 3.
Story continues below ?
Doctors
originally diagnosed her with kidney stones in December, local media
said. But as her condition worsened, she was diagnosed with a urinary
tract infection that spread.
The cause of the infection was not immediately known.
It
reduced the flow of oxygen to her limbs, causing her feet to be
amputated last week and her hands this week. Part of Bridi's stomach
was also removed as doctors tried to contain internal bleeding, local
media said.
Health
officials on Friday said Bridi was not breathing on her own and was
undergoing hemodialysis at a hospital in the city of Serra.
Bridi was twice a finalist in the Brazilian stage of the Miss World pageant.

Obama can’t be bothered to visit with the military… again
Color
me unsurprised. Of all the bal ls Obama attended for his HISTORIC
inauguration, he didn’t feel it necessary to attend the Salute to
Heroes Inaugural Ball, a ball started by President Eisenhower, attended
by Presidents for 14 straight inaugurations. 56 years later, Obama
broke that tradition because apparently mingling with all the
celebrities was more important than greeting, say, the 48 Medal of
Honor recipients at the Salute to Heroes ball. Yep, 48. Every other
President since the ball was started was able to find time on
Inauguration Day to go, but not Obama.
Yeah, this guy loves the
troops all right. Real respect for our military there. But hey, he did
run on a platform of change, after all, and that sure is a change. For
the first time in American history, we have a Commander-in-Chief who
can’t even fake respect for our heroes who have fought, sacrificed, and
died for their country.
Oh, and remember — don’t you ever, ever question his patriotism or his respect for the troops. Not ever.

Victimless Crime File: Pot Smoking Has Been Assaults 17-Year-Old Girl

If only Marijuana was legalized emotionally stunted drug users like
Andy Dick wouldn’t traumatize teens by trying to pull their clothes off
while molesting them. Or at least that’s the theory.
From Fox:
Comedian Andy Dick was arrested Wednesday morning in
Murrieta, Calif., on suspicion of drug possession and sexual battery,
TMZ reports.
An employee in Dick’s manager’s office told FOXNews.com that Dick’s manager would respond later when he had more information.
Cops arrested Dick, 42, just before 2 a.m. in the parking lot near a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant, according to TMZ.
Cops told TMZ they responded to a report of a person urinating in
the parking lot outside of Buffalo Wild Wings, causing a disturbance.
Once there, they stopped a van and found Dick in the passenger seat.
He was arrested for allegedly groping a 17-year-old girl’s breasts and
pulling her top down.
When he was searched, cops say they found marijuana and Xanax.
So can anyone explain to me how legalization would have stopped this sexual battery?

A Yreka man has been arrested in Happy Camp on several counts
stemming from the alleged rape of a young Siskiyou County girl in
November, only a month after he was released from jail on charges that
he had raped three other teens.
Dusty Wayne Titus, 23, is being held without bail in the Siskiyou
County Jail. Titus was booked on suspicion of raping a victim incapable
of giving consent, rape of a drugged victim, giving marijuana to aid in
the commission of a felony and three counts of committing a felony
while released on bail or recognizance.
He was arrested Thursday.
The alleged victim was under 14, Siskiyou County sheriff’s deputies said.
Titus was arrested Aug. 26, in connection with the sexual assaults
of three other Siskiyou county girls under the age of 14. He was
initially held on $100,000 bail but was released Oct. 3, on his own
recognizance.
In the earlier cases sheriff’s deputies and detectives and Yreka
police said they seized an assault weapon, marijuana packaged for sale
and Psilocybin mushrooms when they searched Titus’s residence at the
Nichols Mobile Park on South Main Street in Yreka.
It was not immediately known whether additional charges were filed after that search warrant was served.

Chem Lab: Scientists Are Learning How Weed Causes Paranoia
By Aaron Rowe

January 16, 2008 | 10:57:34 PMCategories:

Neuroscience
In the January issue of Neuropharmacology, which
happens to have a marijuana theme, two teams of researchers tried to
explain what causes some people to feel paranoid when they smoke weed.
If you think it's impossible to have too much of a good thing -- think again.
In the first sentence of their research paper, a group of Italian
scientists explained that low doses of tetrahydrocannabinol -- the
psychoactive chemical in marijuana -- tend to be calming while large
amounts have the opposite effect. What they wanted to know is: which parts of the brain cause those moods?
Daniela Parolaro and her team at the University of Insubria were keen on finding an answer.
By injecting small amounts of the marijuana-derived drug into
different parts of a rat's brain and then watching for behavioral cues,
they learned that THC works wonders in the prefrontal cortex and
ventral hippocampus, but causes anxious behavior when dribbled into the
basolateral amygdala.
German biochemists had an even better story
to tell: Beat Lutz and his colleagues at Johannes Gutenberg-University
studied an enzyme that is partially responsible for anxiety. Make a
drug that can slow it down and you may be able to prevent paranoia.
They proved their point in two ways: Knockout mice, animals lacking
the genetic recipe for that protein, were resistant to nervous
behavior. Also, unusually nervous lab mice were calmed by an
experimental chemical that inactivates the same molecule.
What does all of this mean? Scientists still don't have paranoia all
figured out, but they are getting there quickly. In the meantime, don't
freak out!

Victimless Crime Files: Pot Smoking Degenerate Sleeps While Dog She Starved Eats Her 2-Month-Old
Posted in
Crime News,
Victimless Crime Files by Rob Taylor on November 13th, 2008
According to authorities
17-year-old Linzy Earles “smoked a bowl of Marijuana” and slept through
the sound of her 2-month-old son being eaten alive by a 10-12 week old
black lab puppy that, according to reports, hadn’t been fed for an extended period of time:
TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The family of a 2-month-old boy
couldn’t remember when anyone last fed a Labrador puppy that was
euthanized after it killed and partially devoured the infant,
authorities said.
Tulsa County prosecutors have charged Linzy Earles with
second-degree manslaughter in juvenile court for the July 28 death of
Zane Earles. The count involves culpable negligence - an omission to do
something that a reasonably careful person would do or failure to use
ordinary care and caution.
Linzy Earles is accused of leaving Zane alone in a baby swing
located on the other side of the house from which the teen was
sleeping. The dog was allowed to run around the residence unsupervised
during that period.
Zane’s father and grandfather left the house about 8 a.m., according
to a police report. When the grandmother, Holly Earles, got up about 10
a.m., she found the boy and began screaming. Linzy Earles then got out
of bed, police said.
A police report filed in the case included grisly details of the
incident and interviews with family members that suggested the puppy
was hungry when it mauled the baby.
“Everyone thought that someone else had taken care of the puppy’s feeding,” according to a report.
After being asked why she left her infant in the living room and
went across the house to sleep, Linzy Earles said she had been up until
4 a.m. with the baby, a police officer reported.
“She appeared more concerned about herself and her sleep than about the baby’s safety,” the report read.
Zane had multiple bite and claw marks. A diaper was connected to the
boy by tissue and blood, according to a detective’s report. Missing
parts of his little body included the lower abdomen, front upper left
thigh and lower left buttock, a report states.
The Labrador was taken to the Tulsa Animal Shelter, where it was
euthanized at the request of police so that evidence could be
recovered. No cooked meat, vegetables, grains or starches that would
indicate the presence of commercial dog food were present, a police
laboratory report states
