So McCain wants to offer 3 million dollars to someone to invent a reliable electric car. If memory serves me correctly GM developed the EV 1. If GM brought that car back they wouldn't be hurting financially.

GM leased the vehicle to comsumers and there was no option to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease. The car used no fossil fuel (the oil companies didn't like that) and there was little maintenace/repairs needed (GM didn't like that).

Granted the car wasn't for everyone but for people traveling short distances it was a great car. It had a top speed of 80 MPH, had a 80 mile range on a single charge and went 0-50 mph in 7 seconds.

Turns out that the car was so good that GM took all the cars back from the leasee at the end of the lease and crushed them all in a scrap yard. I believe there might be one or two in storage.

So we have the technology....why don't we use it. Seems the plus out weighs the minus on this one. Just my opinion.

Why on earth would we want to put a huge dent in oil company profits?? They are sooooo good to us. A car dealership makes the bulk of its profits over charging its customers after the car is sold. The major auto makers do not want to take that incentive away from the dealer. They would have to sell their product direct. Hello Walmart and Amazon.

I just watched WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR the other day. It has a little liberal garbage thrown in, but it is a good video and tells the story of how the EV1 was basically removed from the face of the earth.
I'm thinking the major oil companies paid GM to remove all memories of the EV1 because it would cost the oil companies billions every year if the EV1 caught on. GM could make tons of money if they created an updated version dubbed the EV2. They were probably paid hundreds of millions of dollars to vaporize the EV1. If someone ever comes up with an electric or solar vehicle that works good, it will likely be bought off by the oil companies for millions or billions.

Journalistic integrity has a price that I'm sure both big oil and the car makers are happy to pay. The little guy can't afford to run ads on the Super Bowl and the networks are far too profit conscious to do whats right. This movement will spread slowly by word of mouth and over the internet. Despite being accused of being leftist and of being tree huggers the concept of alternative fuels and energy conservation will continue to grow. We as a society have to accept that most politicians once elected are bought and paid for. We need to realise that we need a third partty. Ralph Nader and Ron Paul are right.

Kind of on the subject, and also maybe an "urban legend."

Growing up (70's)I recall hearing about vehicles that could get 80 to 100 miles per gallon. These plans for the vehicles were bought out by the oil companies, because back then if a car got 18 mpg it was considered really good. And the oil companies didn't want vehicles to get great gas mileage because you wouldn't have to stop at the gas stations all the time.

This country seems to always shoot itself in the foot...

I saw a car on on of the cable shows; a 1963 Chrysler Turbine. They only made about 100 of them. That was a promising technology at the time. It could burn just about anything. The big problem was the exhaust heat. It would literally melt the street under it and never ming the person behind you sitting in traffic. Yon can't tell me that 47 years later they can't find a way to disapate the heat? Another idea snuffed out by big(our government)oil??

raybeez, I remember that as well. Do you remember the Pogue Carburetor?? That technology was getting the fuel mileage you mentioned out of the big Ford LTD's etc. Mysteriously it all disappeared, most said the oil companies bought him off, not sure here.

Well leftist aka progressive treehugers this is from wikipedia.
“Chrysler Turbine Car
Throttle lag, high fuel consumption — 17 mpg (U.S.) (13.8 l/100 km) — and exhaust gas temperatures at idle plagued early models. Chrysler was able to remedy or mitigate most of these drawbacks and deficiencies.”

It appears leftist aka progressive treehugers this car was not a gas saver. If I recall it was back in the glory days of more power and higher speeds.
This research was done by car makers because there was profit in making bigger faster engines. This means there was competition to make bigger faster engines. There is no profit with high milage cars.

I remember that Turbine Car. It could burn pure, not e-85, alcohol. In fact it could burn any liquid that burns even three malt scotch. But basicly it was a concept muscle car on steriods. It did look very nice.

Having been one who drove the EV1 (and there weren't many) it was not as great as it was cracked up to be. It was very uncomfortable to drive no matter how the seat was adjusted, it road hard, the visibility was terrible and if you wanted to get the 80 miles out of a charge, you did not turn on the A/C or radio (or lights at night). It was a novelty to drive the first or second time but not after that it. Then there was the battery problem. They did not (and still don't) have an adequate battery for electric cars. They are working on improving them and they are getting better but still lacking. Even the newer hybrids don't have adequate batteries. Finally, I can't disagree with the theory that the oil companies were involved with GM deleting the EV1 but there have been rumors since way back in the 1940's that car manufacturers had carburators that could get 50 or 60 mpg but the oil companies quickly bought out the patents so they never got built. As far as anyone knows, those were just that, RUMORS.

The leftist aka progressive treehugers that chant e-85 have no grasp on reality. In America this alternate energy source is made from corn. A very bad source to make this alternate energy source.
I laugh when the leftist aka progressive treehugers chant the Brazil bs. The Brazilian government is allowing the rain forest to be removed to plant sugar cane to make e-85.
Apparently the leftist aka progressive treehugers will not allow the rain forest to be removed to grow cheap food for beef for fast food industry, but we can remove the precious rain forest to make gas for our cars. There is some good logic. Leftist aka progressive treehugers never cease to amuse me with their screwed up logic. This leftist aka progressive treehugers screwed up logic can be seen in their demand to use light bulbs with mercury in them. For the last 40 or more years the leftist aka progressive treehugers have cried mercury is bad. Now just to not use fossil fuels per the leftist aka progressive treehugers mercury is good.
Electric cars will never replace the gas powered car.

This chant about the oil companies preventing people from developing high milage cars is just that a lie.
Why should a oil company care if a person makes a car that gets a 100 miles to the gallon? The oil companies still sell the gas, just a slower rate. Profit is profit, no matter how fast you make it.

Get rid of the Combustion Engine Vehicles!
Great Idea!
Do away with Oil and Gas!
Great Idea!

But ..... Electric Automobiles?
That will be rather cumbersome, won't it?
Imagine all those extension cords all over the roads.

Come on leftist aka progressives show me the law that prevents any leftist aka progressives from developing the electric car.
That is all I ask.
After asking that simple question leftist aka progressives I will ask another simple question. Why force me leftist aka progressives a person that is comfortable with using oil to pay for any research into alternate fuels? If you leftist aka progressives want these so called other energy source why do I have to pay for them?
When did the oil companies get this type of aid?
