Ok, now this is true and kinda sad. I have a pure bred rat terrier and a mutt as most of you know. Now I know what breed Mouse is, he is the rat terrier and suppose to be bred to hunt and kill rodents. That is what his breed was created for. Then I have Mickey who is a mutt and I  am not sure what he has in him. I suspect hound as he bays and having been raised with bluetick hounds I know that sound fairly well.

Now Mouse, he never chases, hunts nor kills a rodent. He basicly ignores them, (except for squerrils which he plays with), which one might think he would as that is why he was bred. His job in life more or less. But no he does not show the least intrest in doing his job. Where as Mickey, who God alone knows what he was bred for, takes great pleasure in hunting down and bringing me all the little rodents he can catch.

Living in the country we get field mice in the winter and out comes the traps and now Mickey. He is quite good at catching the little rodents. He kills the grown ones but the tiny baby ones he isn't sure what to do with them. He just corners them and bays until I come and dispose of them. Mouse sits and watches with intrest but he is not going to hunt, much less catch one for anyone. Now that is sad. A dog bred to hunt and kill rodents just sits back and watches while the one who is really too big for mouse hunting does just that.

Mouse

Mickey

Now I would really love to know why a dog that should be catching rodents does not and the one who should not does. It's bad enough that one dog teaches the other his bad habits while niether teaches the other thier good habits. Now they are confused as to what they should or should not be doing.

As you can see the little dog gets the big bed while the big dog gets the carpet. They are both suffering from issues of who is what. Mouse thinks like a great dane and Mickey thinks like a chicken. Mouse will chew a leg off anyone he feels is tresspassing while Mickey runs for cover just in case they are dangerous. They are a mess. Now I have the rodent thing going. You live and you learn.

Dogs are like people I guess. The ones you expect to turn out one way end up the other. Strange as it may seem. So what do you do? You just sit back and hope Mickey shames Mouse into doing his job. But I don't think it will happen. After all mouse wieghs in at 11 lbs and Mickey a close 40 lbs and you see who ends up in the bed.

Nite all, Merry Christmas and God bless.

Mickey sounds house spoiled, and Mouse sounds like he has been hungry before and knows what a food source still is.

I hear dogs do, but as of yet have not had to eat one. I guess I am lucky as I have a family, grown now, great grandkids and free time. I earned it at this age in life. Will let you know if I ever have to eat a dog, but as we grow our own food and fruits and we hunt I don't think I will ever have to but if I do, I know you would want to eat the bigger fatter one as he will be less tough.

Why should mouse bother if mickey has it covered... but you are right.. terriers were bred to hunt and kill rodents.
I live in the country and fight the whole field mice thing every year until we got the terrier.. now they are gone.

Well I can safely say Mickey is a great mouser. In two days he has caught 5 and he catches them inside and out. Mouse is content to watch and not dirty his paws or mouth.

Hey, not everyone can be happy all the time and some can't be happy anytime. But there are those of us who take it with a touch of humor. After all but for the grace of God there goes I.
