I am 49, I turn 50 this month. I consider myself by nature as being a caregiver and giving of myself ;) My career was in working with the mentally handicapped, foster children, run-a-ways, abused and neglected teens in residential and group home settings. I then moved to working with mother's in a home visitation format setting, teaching child development. I had wanted to become a foster parent when I retired. My career choice came from an event that happened in my childhood. My career ended when a illness I had as a child returned with a devastating effect. At the age of 13 I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, after a horrible year of pain I was lucky enough to go into remission. Until 5 yrs ago-- I had to go on social security disability--I was totally disabled. The arthritis had returned, I now have it in every joint of my body. With this I also have Fibromyalgia and I was also told that I have Degenerative Bone Disease, there are 2 disc's in both my spine and my neck that are going out. I have bone spurs along the entire length of my spine. I have nerve damage that causes muscle tic's, mostly in my face-eyes and right ear. The nerve damage in my ear (actually the tube to my ear has tic's-spasms) and causes a continuous clicking sound in that ear (which drives me crazy at times)however there is nothing the doctors can do for me about this problem. The thing I dislike the most, isn't the pain or my inability to do ordinary daily chores. It is being a shut in without the ability to go out and meet people--(I rarely drive anymore) so it can get very lonely. This thing I like most--I am still able to walk. I was blessed (thank god) to team up with G who is also on social security disability, together we pool our resources and are able to survive. If we didn't have each other we would be living on the street. So now you know a bit about my background. I would like now to tell you some of the things I enjoy doing when I am feeling well enough. Some of the hobbies I try to enjoy are baking, gardening, crafting when my health allows me to try my hand. I also try to make new friends, being ill can cause you to lose the friends you had because they just don't know how to cope with what has happened to you.
