Does anyone remember what women in movies looked like back in the eighties? Their skin had flaws, OMG they had cellulite, their breast were small, and by todays movie standards overweight. Fast foward to 1990, women are remarkably thinner, some have breast implants, cellulite is disappearing, and skin seems to be glowing. Fast forward to today, hair extensions, fake eye-lashes, breast, butt, cheek, calf implants, some actually had surgery to make them taller, lip injections, chemical peels, botox, etc... Oh yeah, the computer age allows any flaw to be erased by the simple click of a mouse.  What? You mean these women are not perfect?

The young do not understand as they are going through that icky "awkward" period that without surgery and computer enhancements they can never look like a movie star. Many question themselves and develop low self-esteem leading to numerous emotional issues including an eating disorder which has a 20% mortality rate and the decision to go under the knife. Just recently a teenager in Florida lost her life in the name of vanity. She died having her breast fixed because they weren't symetrical. When does all of us come together and say enough???

Perfection should be in our soul and health not in our apperance.

Perhaps I watch too much tv but as I was flipping through the blogs just now, I was also flipping through the tv channels. I come across Discovery Health, and some program on plastic surgery. So here is a mother getting her breasts done because "Oh no, I've had 4 children, breastfed, and I'm over 40" Well, next you see her daughter, I'm guessing somewhere in her mid teens, asking for her breasts to be done. And oh, no mom says no way. However, daughter and sisters are getting their noses done, b/c mom says they need it. I don't think it's just movies and tv, we have so many mothers that are portraying this image, and their daughters see this, and voila, why wouldn't their daughters want it? Goodness, gone are the days of plain and simple. If we could only go back to a simpler time. Don't get me wrong, I have the occasional pedicure and manicure. I have a pre-teen and she is interested in pedi and mani's however, I have told her that when there is a special occasion (her cousins wedding) she will be able to indulge in a pedi and mani, get her eyebrows waxed. But, otherwise, forget it, she isn't going to become fixated on such things. And if she comes to me wanting her breasts done, I hope she's ready for a speech.

It's sad that some parents aren't teaching their kids that they are beautiful just the way God made them. But how could they? They don't believe they themselves are fine the way they are. Just like druggie kids with druggie parents.

Amen butterfly5.

*shaking head* The vanity of mankind. Human nature never ceases to amaze me.

I have watched some of these programs and am astonished at the parents who will give their daughters a breast enhancement for a graduation gift! "I just want to give them some self esteem". Good grief. If the parent didn't give the child what they needed to help make them feel good about themselves while they were growing up what makes them think all of a sudden a boob job will do the trick? Breasts don't have (or shouldn't have) a thing to do with one's self esteem in the long run. (I'm not completely unfeeling; the exception here would be after mastectomy)

Why can't we just grow old gracefully? Gravity has already started to take its toll on me, but I have more important things to do than worry about not being "perky" anymore. Anway, OBEY GRAVITY! IT'S THE LAW!

I agree with the whole vanity thing, but just curious... What movies were you watching in the 80s? Sogourney Weaver, Karen Allen and Carrie Fisher looked pretty good to me.

Not symetrical or perky? I'd like to have my breasts on the same planet! In the '60's we had Twiggy and Mia Farrow, neither of whom weighed 80 pounds soaking wet. We also have some women of size in today's spotlight. Helping our children develop self esteem starts at home, keeping them involved in activities that accentuates attributes other than their appearance...doing volunteer work to help people that are less fortunate and teaching them not to judge others. Talk to them! Don't wait for them to develop their own self image. Also, annorexia has nothing to do with comparing yourself to models or actresses. Its alot deeper than that. I had a horrible eating disorder starting in my teens until I was in my late 20's. I didn't care what anybody else looked like...I was too busy examing myself.

I am a young mother of a strong-willed, beautiful, bright, all the good things in life four year old girl. She is the center of my world.
