After my wife and I watched the report on self-defense by Loren Halifax, my wife has asked me to write this post, which I totally agree with.

I applaud and am grateful for what the Kemp and Smith families and foundations are doing.

My wife, many years ago, worked at a stop-and-shop and was robbed at gun point. In about this same time frame she was a "victim" of an attempted rape. The quote "victim" is because she learned a valuable lesson and will not allow herself to be a victim again.

What Greg Smith is doing is exactly on track. AWARENESS. Not putting yourself in the position of being a victim is 90% of not being a victim. It's a sad and sorry time that we live in that we have to take the added concerns and stress to keep safe, but it has to be done.

One of the common threads to both stories is that these girls were alone. Our suggestion to to go somewere with someone. If someone is with you then the odds of being attacked are greatly reduced.

Another common thread is that they both thought that they were in a safe environment. Sorry to say that there isn't too many places that you can consider as being safe, including your own house sometimes.

If someone can't go with you then you have to prepare and be alert. Have your keys out and ready before you leave a building or car, heads up - scout out an area before you enter it, if you are alone in a building then check out the entrances before you are alone. I'm sure that Mr. Smith on Kelsey's website has many more tips.

Mr. Kemps' heart and motives are in the right place, but in our opinions, Bob and Jill Leiker are going to get many women seriously hurt.

Wailing on a dummy for 7 - 12 seconds looks impressive, and probably made the women feel good, but did you notice something was missing?

THE DUMMIES DIDN'T HIT THEM BACK.

Smack a man a couple of times and you better be prepared to get hit back, it's reflex, and especially if he intended doing you harm in the first place.

The comment that my wife made was 'could you see someone my size hitting someone your size for that long?' She's 5'6" and about 130 lbs., I'm 6'4" and about 250 lbs. She answered her own question with 'get real'. And before you ask it, yes I've been racked before, but give me two good breaths and you had better be gone, the fights I have been in have lasted an average of about 15 seconds - win or lose.

That's reality.

Stomp your heel onto his instep,

Hit him in groin with, well, anything you can,

If you have long fingernails or keys in your hands, go for the eyes and face.

These have been taught in many, many self-defense classes.

Let us also add this. After you have stunned your attacker with one or all of the above methods then;

TURN AROUND AND RUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN AND SCREAM AS LOUD AS YOU CAN FOR HELP.

Don't stand there and try to duke it out with him, you will be one of the 99% that don't survive if you do.

I'm sure that the Leiker's are "champions" in a controlled fight setting, but in reality the rest of the world isn't.

Don't let them get you hurt.

This is a good blog. Self defense teaches awareness and common sense before action.
I took karate, I carry a knife...does that make me any safer...Nope.
Does it make me any more protected..noway.
I walk into stores like I have a chip on my shoulder, always scanning people, where they are and looking out for anything suspicious.
I try to walk in with other people and out with people...but if I am alone, I walk quickly, with keys in hand and anticipate anything that can happen.
If you are followed into a store, report it...if you are already outside in the lot, and you known someone is tailing you turn and look directly at them, then haul BLEEP screaming...better to look like a fool than be a victim.
I can always buy a new purse, cancel credit cards and cell phones...however...if you do try to take MY purse..it will cost you something.;)

I think the main point they are trying to make is to resist.

It is better to resist and be physically attacked in a Target parking lot where someone may help you or call the police...then to allow yourself to be taken to secondary location.

Once you let him take you away...your odds of survival decrease to nearly nill...for no one will be there to hear your screams.

I NEVER carry a purse. If it doesn't fit in my pockets, I don't need it. Purses weigh you down and make it a temptation for a robber or a punk looking for quick cash. I always have my keys ready before I leave any building. I walk quickly to my car while looking all around. I feel ready to pounce at all times.

The Kemp Foundation is putting on a class out here in my community in April and I'm excited to attend it.

As the parent of 2 children that will soon be driving and are both approaching that age where they will be doing more and more on their own, I am faced with new challenges every day. As I read and see the things that are going on in this world, I find myself jotting down ideas and plans for what I can teach and pass along to them. One idea that was passed along to myself via my husband is that we should invest in keyless entry for our vehicle as it was not bought that way. I think that is an excellent idea when you look at the vehicles which may be purchased for teens or even yourself and they didn't come with that option. Just a thought!

Again- if you are absolutely repulsive- a fat tub of lard with pimples, bad teeth, stringy hair, and body odor- you probably won't get attacked. My suggestion for all you ladies out there is to pork up, quit showering, and BLEEP on any male that comes near you. YOU WILL BE SAFE!

A little knowledge is better than none, which I think is the real point. I have taken several self-defense courses, not from either of these gentlemen, but from professional safety instructors I work with and the main ideas they teach is that you want to get away. You don't need to turn all Chuck Norris and beat your attacker to a pulp. You want to do what you need to do to get away from the situation (which may mean defending yourself).

I did not see the news report you are discussing. Can you tell me - did they report that the self defense class they are teaching does not train on the resist and flee methods? Was the view of someone beating on the dummy for that length of time just for media purposes? where it looked better to go "chuck norris" [Like the way lizzie lou said it :)~] - and if so well that is not exactly good reporting on Ms. Halifax part - since the news report is an opportunity to not only inform but teach those watching, and should have focused what ny good self-defense course teaches - which is, as you described - first and foremost awareness and doing your best not to find yourself in a place where you can become a victim, however the world is a bad place and you can be as diligent as possible and still find yourself in a situation where you then must do what the remainder of the self-defense course teaches which is to "stun & flee"
Perhaps the Leiker's do teach it all responsibly and the news coverage was not as responsible and complete as it should have been? As I said I did not see the report you speak of so I do not know whose the true danger, the Leikers or the producer of the segment in question.

Copy and paste this for the story with a related video. If this doesn't work use the search on the news site and put in self-defense.
