States seeking $1 trillion to 'keep afloat'

A group of Democratic governors warned Friday that without as much as $1 trillion in federal assistance, many states will not be able to pay their bills in the next year.

“There are states that are talking as California has of not being able to meet their financial obligations in the coming months,” New York Democratic Gov. David Paterson said on a conference call with reporters. California announced in December that all state employees would be forced to take two days of unpaid leave.

Paterson was joined by fellow Democrats, New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle in warning that states across the country will be forced to make drastic budget cuts in the face of unprecedented deficits.

“We are not crying wolf. This is one of the worst situations our states have faced,” Strickland said. “This is a real crisis. These are real problems. And if we don’t get some significant assistance many of those in our states will suffer greatly.”

Strickland added that the situation facing the state of Ohio is so dire that in order to balance his state’s budget, he would have to fund every state program at 75 percent of its current level. “If I were simply to flat fund the operations of this government, I’d end up with $7.3 billion in deficit,” he said. “We’re just trying to keep afloat.”

In order to make up for the shortfalls, Corzine said the incoming Obama administration and Congress will need to free up $1 trillion in federal spending for state assistance. “We’re all going to be Herbert Hoovers if we’re not careful here,” he said.

I would much rather see legislation allowing state governments to run a deficit for a few years and make cuts. It just doesn't seem right when most states made cuts to balance their budgets and a few get free money.

All of this is getting out of hand.

I agree...but it will continue until we stand up and say no more...even then they will probably do what they want...they most always do.

There is something very broken about our political system. Jefferson worried about factions controlling everything. It seems with the lobby that is exactly what is going on now.

I would hope at some point someone in Washington would have the balls to stand up and say, if we continue we will destroy this nation.

Washington, the states, and the people need to learn responsibility for their actions. I accepted the original bailout because I know that it was Washington that caused the problem to be so great. The states overspent when times were good and they should know better than that. All excess should go into a reserve for times like now. Never count your chickens until the hatch. They planned on money that was not a receivable yet. We the people are no better. We ignored the ramifications of our overspending and now that the party is over we cry foul. If people want to claim ignorance as a defense they are not going to like the regulations that will be in place to protect them from themselves.

I think everyone should sit in the naught corner. Better yet let's all start thinking.

The Scary thing is that the same things that caused the Real Estate Bubble are still going on. The High Risk Loans are Still be given and bought by Fannie and Freddie. The thing that has changed is that less people are buying the repackaged loans as investments. But every time Freddie and Fannie buy one of these bad loans the Government goes deeper and deeper into debt..on top of all of this Emergency Spending all over the Place...we are screwed.

In order to believe that a Politican would stand up and say that is if one cared. I believev that are those that actually want to destroy this country the way it is...and replace it with one they think is better....

What else can explain this behavior from them? No one is that Dumb all the time...and they know that this Gov Spending isn't going to fix it..but yet they continue...reelection can't be the only thing they are doing this for..especially since Congress has a Lousy rating just like Bush..if they wanted to be popular they would do what the People demand that is allowed under the Constitution....but yet they don't...

The question is Why?

People are addicted to credit. They can't seem to understand that however painful, cold turkey is the best way to make the cut. Until then these lenders will keep making money off them and tossing them to fannie and freddie. The government won't stop it because they answer to the groups that are benefiting from those loans.

They don't listen to us because I do not have the money to sway them. You do not have the money and we do not have the time to organize and form a group to pool our resources to be heard. We are too busy working are butts off to stop and organize. Until this happens the majority or middle class will never be heard.

I don't believe politicians are dumb but they are ignorant to business. Sad when you consider that the country is nothing more that a large business with a mess of subsidiaries. Instead of learning what they are voting on they use lobbyists as expert witnesses on what they are voting on. It is crazy, that would be like me calling the Ford dealer and asking what the best made car is. Hum, what do you think the chances are he would say Ford?

Frankly, I'd like to see the states FORCED to balance their budgets. Once they begin to run deficits it will only get worse.

Once these cuts are started, the public needs to have a keen oversight of just what services are cut so that essential services are funded and all of the superficial spending is what is actually cut.

"But war, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice – a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice – is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other." - John Stuart Mill
