So, I started smoking again back in March 2008.  I had quit for over 22 years.  Then met a cop, dated him, started smoking over all the stupidness of him, and gradually came right back up to smoking about a pack a day.  I started for all the wrong reasons, like there is a good reason.  Even my mom dying didnt get me to smoke again.  i think it was almost like a rebel thing of me to do.  I was recently separated from my soont o be X, had a new relationship that went sour, so why not just rebel and do something that I can do if I want to kind of thing.  So I did.  At first, I remember getting a head rush, that was cool.  Then I would buy a pack and keep it in my liquor cabinet for the next weekend out.  One pack sometimes would last me three weekends.  Then I met someone on Mem weekend that drank alot and we always were going out.  So then, he was like, Oh, I dont date smokers.  I am like, Oh, I am not a smoker.  But I was.  Gradually I smoked more and more.  Almost burned down my apartment complex last month being a careless smoker.  Even that didnt make me stop.  I love smoking.  It relaxes me.  I sit and think and smoke. I dont care how much they cost.  Does any smoker really care?  Like that would be the only reason for them to quit smoking?  Hell no.  Addicts dont care how much their addiction costs.  I do like it and I dont want to think about when I am old and on oxygen like my grandma.  I could die tomorrow walking across the street, so I dont think bout the future.  But I dont want to be a smoker.  I hate the smell, I hate the coughing, I hate what others smell on my breath. And if I become serious with a non smoker, then what?  So I said that the first time I get sick, I will quit.  That is how I quit the first time back 22 years ago when I was pregnant with my son.  It is easy to quit when you are sick.  So I am sick.  Yucky stuff, coughing, sneexing, runny nose, head cold.  So my last cig was last night bout 9pm.  Yeah I missed it this morning getting ready for work. I miss it sitting here at work.  I miss it alot. It is definately a head game to be played.  You really are addicted to the habit of smoking.  I miss it alot.  We will see how good I can do.   Do not judge me though, I am definately not perfect.

It is now 10:00 am.  I have not smoked since bout 9pm last night.  Went to buy a pack at the gift store cuz I wanted to go outside to smoke one just to see if it tasted good.  They didnt have my brand, so I didnt do it.  Would have cost me $6 also, but you know, I am an addict so that didnt even matter to me.

It is now 10:35.  I went out to smoke with a friend.  Her brand is a generic brand and it tasted real bad.  Wanted to see though if I really wanted it.  I went back inside and my hands stunk and my coat stunk.

12:30pm-Found a cig in my glove compartment and smoked it on my way home from work. Tasted kinda ok. Went to walmart, did some last minute shopping. Went to check out at register 21-where they sell tobacco. Bought a pack. It is now 8pm, I have smoked 3 more. They all taste yucky cuz I am still sick. Guess I really dont want to quit right now. I do enjoy it, it relaxes me-yeah yeah yeah I know, we smokers have every excuse in the book as to why we do not want to quit. hmmmm I dont know...I dont have any answers.

As a former 2 pack a day smoker for 40 years, I don't think you will stop until you really decide to..no medicine will help, no one raging on you will work, you will know when you are ready and then you will quit.

Yep you r correct. The only reason I had quit 22 yrs ago was because I was pregnant, 2 1/2 months then had the asian bird flu. yep i sure did have the bird flu. So it was kinda easier. But I do enjoy smoking, so I dont think I will quit yet. hmmmm had bout 4 last evening, then already had two this morning.

Nader, how did you do Christmas day? You're right, you won't be able to stop until you're completely ready! I'm a smoker and try to at least keep my smoking at a minimum by doing things that keeps me from smoking...like embroidery or even jigsaw puzzles.
Now for a comment on your other issue...men. I was divorced a few years ago after many years of marriage, and even when a divorce is a good thing, its hard on you! I started dating way too soon. I dated quite a few jerks and then met a man that treated me like a queen. I was very mean to him...something he didn't deserve at all. After that, I decided just not to date for a full year. When that year was over, I soon met the man I am married to now. At that time I was able to have a good healthy relationship.

Hmmm, well I havent stopped smoking. I do enjoy it. It relaxes me and takes my mind off things-i know i know, excuses, but I guess I am not ready to quit yet. Men.....hmmmmm, well I am seeing someone I met back on Mem Day at the airport. He works construction here and has been staying with me since Oct. We appreciate each other and no there is no plans for us in our future, but enjoy each other right now int he present. He is younger than me and perhaps wants a family. Wish i could give him one, he can have mine-hahaha

I started smoking back when you rolled your own.LOL I smoked for years, age 16-50 something. It took a life threatening illness to make me stop. I hope this is not what makes you stop smoking, but reading your blog, I dont think you want to stop or are not ready yet. I do wish you the best. Its a tough one to break.

This year, in April, my 15 year old daughter wrote a paper on smoking...I've smoked for years and my husband for 40.After reading that paper, and watching people w/ tubes comming out of their noses, and after seeing yellow nicotine on my nails under floresant lights, we both decided to quit. God helped us quit. No going back to try it one more time to see if we didn't like it. No patches. we just quit. Believe me, after 2 very hurtful incidents since then, I wanted a cig very bad but didn't do it...yes, it's enjoyable @ the time but knowing they horrible outcome, I'm not going back and neither is my husband. you did it for 22 years, you can do it again. find another vice. Mine is I sleep better @ night now.

Nader,
Good luck with quiting the cigarettes! I've never been a smoker but have seen more than my fair share of the health problems long term smokers have. (Aunt who died in her early 40's from lung cancer, Dad who had a series of heart attacks and a stroke who eventually died in his mid 50's, and an Uncle who died from lung cancer in his early 70's. He had quit years before, but the damage was already done.) Because of them, I never really wanted to smoke, even though I have had jobs and friends where smoking was the norm.

I guess my addiction is food, but unfortunately I am needing to watch that more than I used to. (If I don't I'll end up having to go on insulin. Another family health issue.)

Hope the New Year is good for you, and if you decide to quit smoking it will be for good! (Both for your health, and permeanantly.)

You quit while you were pregnant years ago--your kids still need you. Every one has a story about a friend or family member who has cancer related to smoking, but yet you still smoke. I JUST DONT GET IT---I hope you can beat the habit before it is too late.

Both of my parents smoked for well over 60 years. One died from Alzheimers and the other from Parkinson's. It doesn't always get you! Still, it is a horrible habit...and harder to quit than alcohol or heroin.

here is a story for you. I am not a smoker. Never will be. Here is why.

My son has a good friend. He lives close and we have become attached to him. His family doesn't have much. They can't afford a car, clothes, anything much for their two kids. The boy wants to eat at our house all the time when his mom will let him. I spent $200 on Christmas just for him. His mom got a control issue with him, knowing that the only thing she can control is what he does because they have nothing. SO, she has been keeping him from my house for a couple of months now. I had enough, and went to confront them. Keep in mind, I don't want to tell them how to raise their kid.

They can't afford clothes ( I have been buying him clothes), their car was given to them, can't afford to hardly feed themselves. I stood just inside the door for 30 minutes. I didn't sit down, just stood there. When I came out, I smelled horrible. I was only in there for 30 minutes, he is in there all day. I know kids tease him at school.

Smokers don't care about that, don't care how it affects kids and people around them. It is one of the most selfish habits there is. These people can't afford anything, but sure can find the money for cigarettes.

It is a very selfish habit. I do know that.

Nader, the first place you have to quit is in your mind. I am a respiratory therapist that deals with smokers all the time. I'm the one that puts the tubes in them. I'm also a former smoker, so, unlike alot of people, I can empathize with what you're going through. In my opinion, gums, patches, pills, inhalers, accupuncture, hypnosis and all those other things you can purchase are a waste of money. I've never met one person, in 30 years in health care, who has used these successfully as a permanent solution. Cold turkey is hard and not for the weak of heart. Still, it is the best method. Some of the other responses are just dumb. It's not a selfish habit, it's an addiction. Stupid people think it's selfish, that you don't care how you smell, how your house smells. That shows their ignorance. You do care. You just can't stop the addiction. That's what people don't realize. It's a drug. You get addicted. You have to break that addiction if you want to quit. Most quit helps focus on giving you less nicotine. That's dumb. It's still nicotine, and it still feeds your addiction. You have to quit for yourself. If not, I'll see you in a hospital soon!

Hmmm, well I am recently separated after 27 years. It is a good thing though! I have two kids, 16 & 21 and a 2 yr old granddaughter. I have lived north of the river since 1974. Would never live any other place. Depending what time of the year it is, is what I do for a living. I used to work for HR Block managin an office for 10 years, but they suck so I quit plus I am better than they are so there. During the political season, I help Sam Graves campaign or whomever needs my help! My fulltime job right now along with whatever else I am doing, is managing a small kiosk up at KCI airport. We sell a portable scanner that scans receipts, business cards & documents so you can do your expenses! I love the airport! As my name states, I am a nader chaser- not ralph nader, tornader! I love severe weather! I have the Infamous May 4th tornado on video! I absolutely love to BLOG! I listen to talk radio in my car ALL the time!I love to go to garage sales, I love politics and I love reality TV! My life right now is very exciting and I love it!
