Gay Pride. Jewish Pride. Black pride. Hispanic Pride.

Multiculturalism.

Ethnic pride. Minority rights vs. tyranny of the majority.

For a generation, America has been awash in the celebration of minorities and minorities celebration of themselves. Just recall Black is Beautiful or I am a woman, I am invincible.

At the same time, the majority group in America -- white Christians -- has been allowed to celebrate very little. Rather, they have constantly been reminded of what they should be ashamed of -- their racism, sexism, homophobia, patriarchy, and xenophobia -- real and alleged.

But what about minority shame?

Why does one almost never hear expressions of group shame from members of any American group other than white Christians (specifically, white Christian male heterosexuals)? Are the only evildoers in America white male heterosexual Christians? Is there something inherently wrong about members of minorities expressing anything but group pride? Are there no minority sins worthy of shame? The latter is in fact the argument advanced by many intellectuals concerning black racism, for example. For a generation, college students have been taught that it is impossible for blacks to be racist because only the racial group in power, i.e. whites, can express racism.

Of course, that is nonsense. A black can be a racist just as a white can be one. A minority race might not have the power to implement racist national policies but that hardly means that no minority group, or any individual, can be a racist.

The relative absence of expressions of shame in the Muslim world over the atrocities committed in Islams name is an example of the above. The labeling of blacks who express shame over disproportionate rates of violent crime and out-of-wedlock births in the black community as Uncle Toms is another. The absence of any expression of shame in the gay community over the current blacklisting -- and attempts to economically destroy -- anyone who donated to the California proposition defining marriage as between a man and a woman is another example. When Sen. Joseph McCarthy blacklisted people in Hollywood for real or alleged support for the Communist Party, he was finally shut up with the words, Have you no shame, sir?

Expressing group shame when morally necessary is not airing dirty linen or giving solace to ones ideological enemies. It is, rather, one of the highest expressions of moral development. And it is therefore universally applicable. Being a minority doesnt exempt its members from moral responsibility. It will be a great day for America and the world when minorities begin to express shame as well as pride. In fact, there is real pride in expressing shame. Minorities should give it a try.

Lets start with this Mr. Obama. I doubt you have the guts though.

And that folks is the perfect summation of the angry white man that Nixon discovered in 1968 and the right has exploited ever since to the determent of our national aims. As long as you keep these people concentrating on the culture war, you can keep them voting your way forever, or least until your house of cards collapses from its own weight.

So what exactly do you contest in John's blog, jeepster? It's easy to attack the man when his words ring too true for you to accept them without forcing self-examination. Your personal assault on John shows either some deep seated realization that his blog holds inarguable precision, or your own shameful bias prevents you from seeing the truth.

White people arent allowed to speak openly about the things that they are discriminated about. It is practically forbidden. And then it is dubbed racism.. what a crock

Perhaps you miss the air of superiority in assuming that the "minorities" i.e. people different from "us" owe an apology for perceived crimes of their group. Certainly the people like us never committed a sin. People that spend their time setting them selves or their group up as victims are fighting a rear guard action in a war that has long been lost. Christian, white male heterosexuals no longer dominate the world to the degree that they did in the past. Perhaps the time is here to be aware that the world will be run by a meritocracy that doesn't reflect race, religion or gender and bad people come in all types. Historically, bad folks don't spend much time apologizing and the good folks in each group owe no one and apology.

Your right. But the same people who are the majority of this country are the same people allowing this too happen.Maybe it is time the majority in this country takes it back. This country was built by alot of different people with all kinds of backgrounds and we cannot forget that.In the same breath we cannot forget who has made the biggest sacrifices in this country and that is the White man.I can say that with out being prejudice.

Some white man have reaped most of the benefits, people of all colors have made the sacrifices.
The majority you talk about isn't even a majority now and is becoming less important as time goes on.

Bates is doing a fine job playing discrimination lottery, like sooo many others in the color game. So I guesss some black woman will reap the benefits of money she never really earned.

Anyone want to do a history lesson on what impact the white Christian male heterosexuals have done for mankind globally through the ages?

And since when were women in the minority? I guess that depends on the context and definition.

globally through the ages? We are talking about what is happening in this country. And we already know how you feel about christians. It is your liberal kind that are feeding the hysteria that white people owe everyone. And should now spend our lives walking around on eggs.

Okay, just for you Search, how about what white Christian male heterosexuals have done in American history since lets say Plymouth rock?

Where did you get that I buy into any kind of reparation program? Let's just get a balanced perspective. And I love the Christian - hate the Christianity, isn't that the logic? I love you Search, if you didn't know that before, now you do. Hope that doesn't feed your hysteria.

jturner30 made an excellent point when he said that the majority are the ones who allow these things to happen. Let no one forget that it was the White male Christian Heterosexual who did, in fact, control this country at one point. It was that sme group who transcended the dominant mind-set at that time and did away with slavery, Jim Crowe, allowed voting rights for minorities and women. At the pinnacle of their power they were not forced to do any of those things and there was NO power that could have forced them to! I say that ALL people of the White race have as much right to celebrate themselves, their history, their ethnicity and their culture as any other group has.

Hey jstol, good to talk to you again.

I don't follow your logic on WMCH's doing away with slavery, wasn't it other WMCH's that forced the change? As for granting voting rights for minorities and women, WMCHs were under tremendous political pressure for change and of course the court system and that pesky rule of law thing was (is) a very powerful force. Isn't it?

I agree with your last sentence, just look at my profile, everyone has the right to be proud of their ethnicity, if they want to.

I agree with your last statement too, Search. Not only being made fun of but taking it in the shorts in the courts as far as equality goes. (minus the religious aspect of it - doesn't seem to matter when it becomes a color/race issue)

Hey Stephen - Ditto!
I didn't say ALL WMCHs. I am saying that it was members of that group who tannscended the mindset of the day. Had ALL WMCHs stuck together change would never have occurred, the status quo would have been maintained and slavery would still exist today. Some chose to transcend that status quo and then a lot of things happened. I'm not convinced that they intended for it to go as far as it has.

Instead of acting like free people too many minorities have rejected personal responsibility and, instead, have chosen to blame and vilify others for their plight.
