KC picks new municipal judge

Katherine Emke, an assistant prosecutor for domestic violence cases in Kansas City Municipal Court, was selected today to serve as a judge in that court.

The City Council voted 8 to 4 to select Emke over local defense attorney Ardie Bland. A third candidate was Eddie Medina Lorenzo, a staff attorney for Legal Aid of Western Missouri.

Council members praised all three candidates as being eminently qualified but those who supported Emke emphasized her experience and knowledge of the court. She worked part-time in the prosecutors office from 1994 to 2005 and full-time from 2005 to the present.

In her interview with the council, Emke said she hoped to make probation more successful by making the court more sensitive to defendants who cannot afford monitoring costs or fees for programs such as drug counseling, anger management or even community service.

Those people often don’t show up for court dates out of fear, which leads to arrest warrants and further compounds their problems, Emke said. If funds are available more of those programs should be done through the court instead of through other agencies, she said.

She also said she was sensitive to the fact that minorities receive more citations that end up in municipal court.

“You know there’s racial profiling (by police) going on,” Emke said. “It’s the secret no one wants to talk about but it’s out there.

Supporting Emke were Mayor Mark Funkhouser and council members Jan Marcason, Cindy Circo, Cathy Jolly, Beth Gottstein, Deb Hermann, Bill Skaggs and Russ Johnson. Supporting Bland were council members John Sharp, Terry Riley, Melba Curls and Sharon Sanders Brooks. Ed Ford was absent due to an injury.

I can't believe that this is a formal asst prosecutor. Show the hard data and back your opinion with facts that support your thoughts!

KC cops provide profiling data for every contact they make. KCPD goes above and beyond what is required by them federally in collecting this data.

I guess my opinion is if the people can't afford the rehab, anger management and community service fees....then DON'T BREAK THE LAW!!!

If criminals can not afford to pay the fees, the police should not bother arresting them.

The police should begin "profiling" wealthier people that have the money to pay for their crimes.

If you don't have a job...

And you don't have any money...

And you have a drug problem...

And you have outstanding warrants...

And you enjoy breaking the LAW...

COME to KANSAS CITY, the City of Felons.

"We have more FELONS than ROME." (That could be our new City Slogan.)

Franky, you're not too far off as to what's going on. It IS all about the money. If you want to see a sad attorney, look at one who has a client that has no money and nothing to lose---a basic definition of your average street criminal.

Where are they going to put them....in Jails that are overflowing?

It's catch and release and for the rest of us...conceal and carry and watch out!

I'm so sick of hearing about racial profiling,if the criminals are of a certain race that commit the crimes, and get arrested, then its racial profiling.,but if the percentage of the criminals were white, and were arrested then what do we call it ??????

I think that the KCPD is definitely guilty of racial profiling. I see examples all the time. They will stalk minorities, and they especially harass inter-racial couples. It makes me sick to see this, unfortunately, it's the sad, sad truth.

I watch, I interact, and I move among you. I'm everywhere and nowhere. I pull the strings, plot and scheme. We all are playing one huge game, but are you on the right team? Are you honest and true to others....yourself? I'm not angry, just a judge in what is right and what is wrong. I don't only speak about this.....I act.
