I recently discovered a "bite" of some sort on my daughters leg is indeed MRSA. The Pediatrician stated about 77% of what people think are simple insenct bites are MRSA. What really irriates me about JUST NOW discovering she has this infection, is the fact we had taken her numerous times to Childrens Mercy for red swollen joints and a low grade fever with a rash all over her body along with this "bite"..... from what I am understanding is a tale tale sign of MRSA spreading to her organs. This has been going on since December 24, 2007 and I am just NOW being told she has MRSA!!!!!!!

In my opinion, the doctors at CH really dropped the ball on this one. My Peds doc had tried numerous times to have her admitted, but didn't have privilages at CH, and every time I took her to CH they told me to take her to my regular doctor. EVEN after a test indicated her kidneys weren't functioning properly. This test was done at my docs office. So agian we were told to go to the ER at CH. Once agian a test was ran on her kidneys, HOWEVER, they (CH) left the speciman in our room for three hours prior to sending it to the lab. For a correct kidney function test the urine is supossed to be tested within 15 minutes.

So with the condition at times appearing better, they chalked it up to perhaps arthritis or maybe allergies.... eventually it was phycosamatic.... basically they had no flippin clue. Luckily, I just so happened to change Peds and guess what..... they tested for MRSA. Exactly what it is!!!!

So now because CH just didn't have the time to deal with my daughter properly in the ER, she is dealing with a very serious case of MRSA. Funny thing.... I kept telling them, "I am her mother I KNOW something is not right!" They basically said I was over protective and just needed to calm down. What good that did!!!

The point of me writing is if you have a sore that isn't going away.... get it checked!!! Demand a MRSA test certainly if you develop a slight fever, swollen red joints, and a rash over parts of your body.

Mayoclinic.com says ANY skin infection should be tested for MRSA before treatment is begun. If treatment is started with standard broad-spectrum antibiotics, and it is MRSA, the meds won't be effective and it may become more antibiotic-resistant. I think alot of people are intimidated by doctors, but this is no time to be shy. As you say, BeStrong, people need to INSIST on being tested. I'll be praying for your daughter, too.

Unfortunately, I placed my trust in the doctors and the infection has had eight months to spread. In to her kidneys....

Ok, just to play devil's advocate I have a couple of questions.

1. Why did your Dr not just order a MRSA screen from the lab he/she normally uses?

2. Why would your DR try to admit to a hospital he/she does not have privileges for?

3. Why didn't you go to the hospital he/she does have privileges?

Sounds to me like your Dr's office dropped the ball not CH. (and yes, I do work in the medical field)

NONE ordered a test UNTIL I switched Peds... Not CH nor previous doc.

2. They faxed paper work to CH asking for her admission because that would be the "best" place for her as well as gave me her records to show er docs there. Since you work in the med field you should know the appropriate time time table for testing which CH did not adhere to. So they sent me back to reg doc who sent me back to CH. After months of being bounced around, I changed docs and got a diagnosis.

I did the best I could do. I placed my trust in the doctors.... something I will not EVER do agian!!!!

Actually I do work in the laboratory so I know how specimens can take longer sometimes especially at large hospitals. At the moment I can't think of one that has to be tested within 15 minutes for kidney function so I will have to look that one up. Do you remember which test was actually ordered? But I also know you can't admit a patient at a hospital that you have no privileges at. MRSA can be treated at any hospital and does not require anything special (and is actually quite common). So I wonder why your original doctor didn't submit a swab for the original diagnosis and then admit to the hospital he/she has privileges. I definitely would not go back to him/her.

Have they been able to treat the MRSA now at the new place? How is she doing? Better I hope!

They never did a MRSA test nor did CH. They were more focused on arthritis or another condition I can't recall. It was only after taking her to an actually very young Peds doc did she catch it.

Really I don't know why noone ever tested for it prior, but it has been found and linked to her swollen joints and rash. To be honest her spot did not look like any of the pics I have seen on the internet nor did it ever dawn on me that is what she had.... anyway she is on a very high dose of antibiotics and steriods. Should know how they are working in a day or so.
