I cannot BELIEVE you did not put this to the members for a vote!  The most important vote in UAW history, and you screwed up BIG time!  My husband is a UAW member, and he would have GLADLY taken a cut in pay if it meant he could keep his job! How DARE you not have the members vote on it.  Just who do you think you are?  You need to be OUSTED!  It's a good thing you're far from Kansas, I'd come to your office and yank you out of it myself!

I thought the workers should have been able to vote. The problem is now. 2011 is too far away to wait to fix. Payroll/Payroll Taxes/Employee Benefits are companies' biggest expenses.

Here's the main problem, almost all of the UAW employees would have accepted a slight pay decrease. Why? If not, then you may be looking at no hourly wage at all.

Concessions need to be made not only at the UAW level but how about upper management? The suits at the Big 3 make too much money and way too much on their annual bonus check. It's time to even out the playing field.

There are too many chiefs getting too much money soaking in any profits as bonus compensation. There needs to be a disinterested third party watching their pay if the government gives them charity money.

If you cannot prove to manage your resources now then what makes you (upper management) think you can do it after you get a $14 billion check? I agree with the blog author on this UAW Jerky Boy.

Speedy I think lady's point is that it is their future at stake. The execs and UAW big wigs have nothing but gravy at stake. If the big three tank only the low level workers will be hurt.

Personally I think it is sick that these higher ups are putting hard workers lives at stake and at the same time using these people to try to extort money from the government. This is the reason I think the governments money is better spent making sure the unemployed can survive until they find a good job. I just don't think anyone is looking out for the little guy anymore.

Right on!! This should have been put to a vote. The problem is that Union leadership really does not have its members interest at heart. The leadership may have screwed its members out of a job, because they are too arrogant! Not only are they arrogant, they are stupid as well!

The great part will be when gettelfungus and all the other slime get canned when GM and Chrysler have to file for chapter 11. Then, maybe they can compete. Really, who ever heard of getting paid to sit at home?

Its not only the suits who make too much money. Its the ordinary UAW employees that make too much money as well. 30 bucks an hour or MORE? STOP IT! You all need BIG pay cuts. Thats the reason it costs $20.000 for even a small nice car let alone a pick up truck. Knock those hourly wages down to 20 bucks an hour and we could see better prices on the cars and truck down the road a piece.

30 an hour? Thats BS. Its not even a skilled job. Anyone can turn a wrench or push a button to put together a car. Even me. Bogus! Thats why America is in the shape its in. Too many people think they are big wigs and their not. Cut em all down to size, especially the CEO's and CFO's and all upper management. Do some work for once instead of sitting behind your fancy desk telling people what to do. Get your hands dirty. I do.

You clearly have never been in a plant and watch them work. There are some jobs there that are skilled trades. On the wages, how do you explain that our cars are comparable in price to the foreign jobs? In one report I saw, Japanese plants actually paid their workers $32.00 an hour. You need to get rid of some bitterness and take a pill. Preferably a cyanide pill.

My husband works for a company that works for Chrysler. It costs them $15,000 to make the Dodge Ram truck--how much does that truck cost $43,000. What does that kind of mark up tell you. Let them go under, someone else take over and the unions go bye-bye. Then maybe they can make some money.
I don't argue that they shouldn't make decent money but alot of the money the unions get is for themselves Not the workers.
Basehorlady, I realize you take that as an insult to your husband but that was uncalled for against Dino, everyone has their own opinion. I happen to agree with most of what he said and my husband's job depends on the industry too.

The actual cash hourly wage is comparable, it is the benefits that is much higher for the big 3. $75 an hour plus benefits compared to $35 and hour plus benefits for Toyota. No comparison!

98% good comments! What do you think if all the worker bees, that do the actual work, stopped paying Union dues? This is just a question as I am not a Union worker at an automotive plant but I would think that would put some more money in the worker bees pocket. I also agree the 75% of upper level management should be fired without their "Golden Parachute"!

Basehorlady, you are uncalled for and not at all polite. Please leave the room or I shall be forced to waylay you with tales from the darkest recesses of my mind.
Tales of witchety grubs and toxic UAW workers running amok helter skelter.

Merry Christmas. :-)

The American auto industry can't be saved by simply cutting pay. You can pay everyone, from the CEO to the guy that scrubs toilets, minimum wage. But if you don't make a product that people WANT to buy, you won't make a dime. American auto makers have a really good handle on the luxury and SUV markets. But the majority of people want something that is 1) affordable, 2) reliable, and 3) safe. Look no further than the Toyota lineup if you need an example of what to do.
