My husband is a UAW member in Kansas. We want to know WHY the UAW didn't put a pay cut to the members for a vote? How IRRESPONSIBLE of them to take it on themselves, saying we wouldn't take a cut in pay!!! My husband would have voted to take a cut in pay! Some heads need to roll for this!

I'm quite sure a pay cut woould have bought on the bailout money but like you stated, the members should have been given the opportunity to make that decision. There are a lot of jobs at stake here and one or two people should not have taken the opportunity to speak for all....

This union is undermining the employees who pay dues on a regular basis...

What did you expect? The UAW got the employees into this, you don't think they will give up anything to get out of this do you?

I'm glad to hear that your husband is willing to take the paycut.

Although I'm against all of these private industry bailouts, I would be more understanding of the Big 3 receiving one if the employees weren't making $70 an hour.

the UAW is behavin' in the model of all union history ...it always looks good on paper but the devil is in the practices they employ and the attitude they hold ...besides in fifty years I've always found the unions especially the UAW unbothered by bringing economic hardship on the entire population outside their ranks ...you can not be a union industry and be competitive against their non union counterpart pure and simple ...the UAW understands that and the translation is it's over with for them! ...no matter how this goes one thing is for certain the UAW is well on it's way out of existence and all the hierarchy along with the lawyers they keep close at hand have a short life in which to dance the final fandango...

…this’ll be the most positive achievement this situation can produce …the UAW is driven this thing cause they know the bankruptcy court is definitely a death sentence for ’em…

Most, I repeat, most Unions have always been underlying factions in making [some] workers less productive and efficient in their daily task(s). It's more like a guaranteed "Adult Baby Sitting" venture for those who seek continuous ascension of monetary compensation for, less just say, less work...

It is true, all union members are not this type but some [as I have experienced in past management] will use the Unions as a shield to cover their incompetence at performing up to par on their assigned task(s) / job descriptions...

BasehorLady, please do not try to read your husband into this statement because I do not know him but have dealt with Unions while in Transportation Management positions and boy, did we have some real winners to deal with...

I understand what you mean linebacker, luckily my husband is one of the few really good guys that takes pride in his work. He's a wonderful husband and dad, and would give a stranger the shirt off his back. He gives a good day's work for a good day's pay. He doesn't do anything halfway, not at work nor at home. It[s sad to see him work there over 30 years, providing for his family, and now this.

Needless to say and in spiritual thought, just keep you and your family in prayer. This just might be a door opening for the best (i.e., Gettlefinger being ousted for pulling something like this)... Stay in prayer and things will, I repeat, will work out for the best... It's never failed for me...

Union members do have a vote, they vote regularly for there business agents, local representatives, local heads, regional heads and national officers. They also vote to approve their contract every 3 years. Where the negotiations in Congress broke down was that the sothern Republicians wanted more UAW wage concessions in 12&1/2 months(year ending 2009) and not in 2011 when the UAW contract expires.

I don't like everything my Congressional representitive, Senator, or President does but I voted for them to represent my views. If they missrepresent me I vote them out! Every decision they have to vote on can't come back to me, thats representitive government, unions are run the same way.

At least your husband is still working your UAW brothers at Sparrow's Point Baltimore have been long out of work and the plant has recently been leveled. Stop complaining and stand up and fight for your job. James 2:20 Faith without works is dead.

The question shouldn't be do I need to lower my wages and benefits to match thoes of foreign car line workers it should be how can I help them to get fair wages, better benefits, health care and retirement.

The question should be what can I do to help my husband and other union families through these hard times.

I think the thing that upset me so about this refusal to accept cuts by the union is that management was the mouthpiece saying, "NO." By "management," I mean the automanufacturers themselves. Clearly, they are in bed with the UAW and THAT smacks of corruption in a HUGE way. We all know that the workers themselves know that this economy is in big trouble...the workers are the first to know that if people have no money to buy cars that they will be without jobs. It appears to me that the boys at the top should ALL be fired. Everyone's fate is tied together... if everyone gives back a little, and those that have a lot (management's salaries and bennies) gave even more....well, taxpayers would willingly help via bailout. As it is, the boys at the top are driving the bus off a cliff....and, unfortunately, everybody is on that bus. Employess at the plant must stand up NOW and howl...if they wait, the old boys at the top of both union and manufacturing will destroy their jobs. Hmmmm....as someone said the other day...was it linebacker??.... reminiscent of the Bolshevic (sp?) Revolution?
