Priest says it's because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion

from the AP wire

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."

Risking their immortal soul
During the 2008 presidential campaign, many bishops spoke out on abortion more boldly than four years earlier, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. A few church leaders said parishioners risked their immortal soul by voting for candidates who support abortion rights.

But bishops differ on whether Catholic lawmakers — and voters — should refrain from receiving Communion if they diverge from church teaching on abortion. Each bishop sets policy in his own diocese. In their annual fall meeting, the nation's Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

According to national exit polls, 54 percent of Catholics chose Obama, who is Protestant. In South Carolina, which McCain carried, voters in Greenville County — traditionally seen as among the state's most conservative areas — went 61 percent for the Republican, and 37 percent for Obama.

"It was not an attempt to make a partisan point," Newman said in a telephone interview Thursday. "In fact, in this election, for the sake of argument, if the Republican candidate had been pro-abortion, and the Democratic candidate had been pro-life, everything that I wrote would have been exactly the same."

On “Meet the Press,” McCain said he had “come to the conclusion that the exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother are legitimate exceptions” to an outright ban on abortions.

So according to this, even if someone voted for McCain, they couldn't receive communion either. What a crock! Neither candidate totally opposes abortion.

This is why I am not Catholic. Someone needs to remind this clown about separation of church and state.

This is a good argument for eliminating the tax deduction for churches that take political positions. I think that McCain's position is reasonable and one that most American's agree with. Calling anyone "pro-abortion" is a political statement and does not describe anyone's position except, perhaps, the Chinese government. By this Bishop's, as well as many other politicized religious spokesperson's position, there was no acceptable candidate for president in the last election.

They can do anything they want, ask a few Catholic Kennedys. Cash talks, B.S. walks.

No time better than the present to remove churchs that delve in to politics, from their tax exempt status. Long overdue.

I will say this again, my first comment did not make it on for some reason. I will assume operator error this time.
This blog tells me it is time to pull to the plug on tax exemption for churches that delve into politics. Remove their tax exempt status. Long over due.
Catholic for opposing candidates specifically and not always accurate reasoning on abortion, stem cell research, gay marriage, and the list of hot button issues goes on.
Churches should stick to religiion, the bible, and not political agendas of their leaders.
If they want to act a Politicsl Action Committees, then do so, but give up your tax exempt status. I am very conmfortable with that.

It’s actually very simple. If you can’t follow the beliefs of your church, get out. Catholics know the teachings of the church. It’s not a situational religion, you don’t just follow those beliefs you’re comfortable with. Jesus Christ might be seen as the prince of peace, but God is a dictator, and vengeful. If you look back into the old testament you’ll see that God had limited patience with those who didn’t follow his word. Cities were destroyed, disease, famine and wars were visited upon entire nations for their sinful ways. One could compare those early trials and tribulations to things that are happening today. Something to think about.

Too funny. How do all those Massachusetts Democrats who are Catholics get away with it?

They're all for gay marriages, divorce--I think Teddy got one, and drinking and crashing off bridges, and toss in a little Priest payoffs because of their behaviour as well.

I think if you pay enough money in the Catholic church they'll let you get away with anything. They sure do lead the nation in PAYOUTS.

FIRST OF ALL THE CHURCH AND STATE WERE TWO SEPARATE DEALS, BUT BOY NOT ANY MORE SINCE MONEY BECAME THE OBJECT.

HAS ANYONE OUT THERE NOTICED HOW THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS CHANGED???? YEA WELL I HAVE. I LEFT ONE CATHOLIC CHURCH BECAUSE MONEY WAS ONE BIG THING THERE, AND THEN YOU HAD THIS PRIEST WHO WAS MATERIALISTIC. THATS NOT WHAT I GO TO CHURCH FOR NOR DO I WANT SOME PRIEST TELLING ME WHO I SHOULD VOTE FOR. AM I WRONG PEOPLE OR WHAT?

Not gonna happen searching. The Roman Catholic church still has incredible power worldwide. They're technically still a nation of their own.

These people who can't eat the christ cookie either will go somewhere else or won't care. It's a non-story to a non-catholic.

It's from the Bible. Now, I don't completely agree with everything in the Catholic religion, but on this one point, I do agree. You must examine yourself first, confess all of your sins first before partaking of communion or it will make you sick, even to death. It's a warning right out of the Bible. So if you want to argue with someone, argue with God. That's right!

Adrenochrome, I know you must not believe
the Bible, but look it up. It is in there.
