His family and friends call him a local hero, who died too soon. Shane Austin, 19, who grew up in Edgerton, Kansas died Sunday while on patrol outside of Baghdad. Terry Austin says his son was a great soldier who always wanted to join the military. Mr. Austin says he's proud his son was able to live his dream. But it's a dream, Mr. Austin says became his worse nightmare. Mr. Austin said he prayed everyday that Shane would come home, he just didn't expect it would be in a coffin.
Shane's friend John called me this afternoon thanking me for the story featuring Shane's life. He said Shane was a gem and he'll miss his best friend. Shane's younger brother Kyle remembered how he said goodbye to his brother in May not knowing that last goodbye would be forever.
We often hear that we should tell the people we love that we love them. This is another reminder of that.
