I watched the news  as the reporter told of the lines to Oak Park Mall, as my jaw dropped, last night. Are you kiddin' me? All I'm seeing is Black Friday all over again.    I don't get it...I've got about $1.29 left in my bank account after Christmas shopping...did all these people get gift cards? OR maybe some had a rich aunt give them a piece of the Hope diamond for a gift.  All I know is I had a wonderful time giving this year and now that Christmas is over and Chistmas past is a few days old, I can look back and remember the happy faces as the kids open the splendid gifts I carefully picked out for them. I remember the wrapping paper and the PJ's my hubby got me that I've been wearing day and night since.  I want to relax now and enjoy the coffee and the leftover cheesecake.  Happy New year everyone. I hope it's great for all of us.

I got three gift cards just from people at work, and hubby always gives gift cards so I can get what I want, and we have a family party tomorrow where we'll probably get more gift cards! I just cashed in one yesterday I got in February...

They are definitely fun! I have a QT one to hubby last year because he liked going getting cappuccinos in the morning before work.... I used a couple of Applebee's gift cards yesterday that I got from the year before!!! That is so much fun, getting to order whatever you want!

Oh, I gave my hubby a subway gift card this year for 20.00. He loves the 5.00 special. But basehor, did you see the crazyness @ the Legends the day after Christmas? My daughter works there and told me they did 3 x the sales they were expecting! I was there to return something and couldn't believe the crowd and it was 6:30 in the evening!

The only place I went at the Legends was the Applebees, and it wasn't overly crowded. That was about 2pm. I sat at the bar so I could eat right away and when I went to Kohl's, I paid for my perfume at the jewelry counter, so I didn't have to wait at all there either, and Price Chopper, I was only second in line about 6:00 pm so I lucked out all around that day!

I hope all you ladies enjoy those gift cards! This morning my daughter and I took some groceries to a family whose father was killed in October by a drunken driver. Much to our surprise, we found that their furnace wasn't working but they didn't want to complain.
The mom has been working at Hardies but this doesn't even come close to covering their mortgage and utilities. There are 2 boys in the family, 11 and 6. My husband bought them winter coats, gloves and hats. My son-in-law works with a guy who's brother owns a heating and cooling company. He's over there right now fixing their furnace. He's doing it for free.

You ladies enjoy your gift cards.

WOW jtherron....no need to be so catty. Do you think that any of us knew that? YIKES! And while I only got 1 gift card, I wanted to chime in and say that I was at Wal Mart in Gardner. Spending my a$$ of I might add. Wanna know something else...I was buying for next year. Wanna know something else? I'm not bragging. We both work, we don't use credit cards, we have only our monthly necessity debt and a car payment. We have worked our a$$es off to get to where we are and we are proud to be able to do what we do. Wanna know what our children got this year for Christmas? New coats, a couple new hoodies (on sale for $10 each), a couple $2 dollar movies, and some stocking stuffers ($3 cologne @ wal mart and some chap stick, fruit and nuts). So, while I'm very saddened by the tragedy of this family, and honestly I am. I think your rudeness toward these ladies who are enjoying themselves is ridiculous. Somewhere in the city tonight someone is facing troubled times. None of us know what this familys life was like before their father was taken from them. Did they live within their means? Do they have hobbies or habits that could be cut out to save money? So I say to you jt...get a grip. Sorry you are so angry at life. To everyone else....Truly, I am not bragging, however, I was at Kohls, Gordmans, Wal Mart, joining in to grab up on the after Christmas sales. The kids got some cash and they used it for school clothes. We are not wealthy by any account, but we have finally found some financial stability. And we are enjoying it. We donate before we splurge on ours

ourselves. We give to several local organizations that help children who are crippled (Shriners) and we also donate to a Military organization. May you all be blessed with a healthy and happy New Year. And may this family jt speaks of find a way to get back on track and live without sorrow and pain.

Well, last year my husband got several gift cards from family members from walmart. Know what we used to buy necessities with when he was out of work and no money was coming in? The Walmart gift cards bought our food and toilet paper and other things we ran out of that are needed to run a household! That's one reason why I bought my husband a Walmart gift card, because I knew he depended on them during that period and it meant a lot to him to have the gift cards! My secret santa person at work asked what I would like - I said gift cards to either Walmart or Target - both places where you can get toilet paper or soap... I'm not sorry I asked for gift cards at all. Isn't it better to get something I CAN use than some silly jewelry that cost the same amount of money and I will never wear??? I'm 46 and I've volunteered for over half my life, for a total of 26 years. I'm always thankful for everything I'm given, and I always give more than I get, which I don't have a problem with. I never will feel bad for receiving a gift card! Hopefully herron didn't mean her post like she sounded, I think she's a good person. and YES, I very much enjoyed my time away after dropping off my elderly dad to spend some time with his friend. I desperately needed time to myself!

I didn't mean to sound so pissy...I probably should have waited a bit before I posted that comment.

Or posted a completely different blog. everyone here shouldn't have to feel guilty for the Obviously frugal Christmas which we are all happy about.
It is not like any of us got the Hope Diamond for Christmas or anything...

You act like we should never have any happiness in our lives because there are people who don't have any.

I don't get gift cards. Why not just give cash? What is the advantage of a gift card?

As for the mall.... kids who got money, or people taking all their junk back that they never really wanted anyway.

My husband and I both work. FULL TIME. We have 4 children @ home. Not only did we do the gift cards for our kids, we gave to 2 families who had lost everything; one family who has 8 children. then on top of that we gave to the Angel Tree ministries. Our family did this, all of us together. We did this from our hearts, because we wanted to give back this year whats been given to us.

Jtherron50, I know you're a good egg! I love it when people vent on my blogs as long as it's kept clean. Nothing to forgive! Happy New Year!

jtherron...I appreciate that you can come back and apologize and admit/take accountability for your pissy moment. I have them myself! And I'm probably guilty of using this space for venting. I hope I wasn't too bit*chy in my reply. This time of year brings out a really bad side of me unfortunately. It's because I live in a small town that is full of freeloaders, folks trying to keep up with each other, folks who live vicariously through their kids or friends, you name it. So, I sort of fly off the wire when certain issues come up. I have had quite an interesting situation about one local charity in particular. One that we don't drop money into the little red kettle. When we give back, we are extremely picky. We do however donate and give back. It's just that the organizations we do so with are the type of organizations that we know will use the money wisely, and that the freeloaders aren't going to take advantage of. I hope you and everyone here has an absolutely, positively perfect New Year! Be safe and enjoy!
